On June 2, the Korea-Africa Foundation held a launch event for the Af-PRO essay collection『Connecting Korea and Africa』  the seventh volume at the Bellevue Suite of the Lotte Hotel in Seoul, providing an opportunity to share the experiences and on-the-ground stories of experts bridging Korea and Africa.

This essay collection features contributions from nine experts active in diverse fields including diplomacy, healthcare, business, culture and arts, startups, and academia who have contributed to enhancing Korea-Africa cooperation. The contributors documented the challenges and moments of change they encountered firsthand in the field, candidly sharing their thoughts on the value of the cooperation built between Korea and Africa and the direction for future development.

This year’s essay collection holds particular significance as it was published to coincide with the Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

The event began with a welcome address by Kim Young-chae, Chairman of the Korea-Africa Foundation, and a congratulatory speech by Lee Ju-young, former Vice Speaker of the National Assembly. Chairman Kim expressed his hope that the Af-PRO essay collection, as a record of the vivid experiences and insights of experts connecting Korea and Africa, would contribute to enhancing mutual understanding and broadening the foundation for future cooperation.

Following this, former National Assembly Vice Speaker Lee Ju-young highly commended the expanding cooperation between Korea and Africa across various fields and expressed his hope that this essay collection would contribute to enhancing mutual understanding and exchange by serving as a bridge connecting the two sides.

The launch ceremony was attended by H.E. Mohamed Ali Nafti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Expatriates of Tunisia, as well as Hwang Gyu-deuk, Dean of the College of International Strategic Languages and Professor in the Department of African Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Park Se-eun, Principal Researcher at the International Vaccine Institute; Amidou Diabate, CEO of Tiamonyon and a traditional West African musician; and Kim Ju-an, CEO of Kilimanjaro Tiger. They signed the chapters they authored and shared their thoughts on the significance of the publication. In the session that followed, the participants introduced the background behind their contributions to the essay collection and shared their diverse experiences and stories from the field, gained through their travels between Korea and Africa.

In addition, H.E. Mohamed Ali Nafti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Expatriates of Tunisia, delivered a keynote speech in which he reflected on his time as the former Tunisian Ambassador to South Korea. He stated that he has witnessed firsthand how Korea-Africa cooperation has steadily developed and grown stronger across various fields from that time to the present. He went on to emphasize that both sides would continue to work together to ensure that Korea-Africa relations continue to develop based on mutual trust and cooperation.

The Korea-Africa Foundation plans to continue widely sharing the field experience and expertise accumulated through the Af-PRO network and to pursue various projects aimed at expanding the foundation for cooperation between Korea and Africa.
